The search for two snowboarders missing near Mount Bogong continues today (Monday) following the discovery of their empty campsite on Sunday morning, The Age reports.

Experienced outdoorsmen Martin Buckland, 33, and Daniel Kerr, 32, both from Melbourne, have not been heard from since Thursday.

According to their note in the trip-intention book at Camp Creek, the pair planned to stay at Mitchell Hut and then camp on Eskdale Spur before returning on Saturday.

The last communication the men had with their families was a photograph message sent from Mitchell Hut, a stopover point within the Alpine National Park on the way to Victoria’s highest peak.

A group of walkers discovered a tent, sleeping bags and other equipment on Sunday. Police said the lack of snow disturbance suggested the duo had not been at the campsite since the last snowfall, which was around noon on Saturday.

A low of -6C was recorded at nearby Falls Creek at 6am on Sunday. Forecasters expect weather conditions to degrade on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In a statement, Sally Buckland said her husband knew the area ‘‘like the back of his hand”.

Police believe the snowboarders were carrying an EPRIB but it has not yet been activated.
