LESSONS LEARNT

If you’ve grown up in Australia, there are loads of aspects to adventuring here that are so ingrained, so second nature, that, you don’t give them any thought, to the extent you may even forget to mention them to any first-time international visitor. But not Kiwi expat Ross Hanan; here’s his lowdown on what to expect when adventuring in Oz, or if you’re Aussie born-and-bred, what to tell visitors coming here for the first time.

TWO-DOGS RATU

This storyteller, adventurer and activist expands the idea of what a life can be.

CELEBRATING FIFTY ON THE FRANKLIN

In 1976, a group of concerned citizens, among them Bob Brown, gathered to determine what they could do to halt the proposed destruction of one of the planet’s most precious places-the Franklin River. They decided to create what is now known as The Wilderness Society. Fifty years on, to celebrate its birthday, members of the society gathered to paddle the river where it all began.

SUPER BOMBER THREAD

Figuring it’s time to prove themselves as climbers, Seb Ashton and his mate Craig decide they should begin taking on some big walls. First stop: the Warrumbungles. It doesn’t take long for the fun and games to begin.

KYRGYZ DREAMS

Despite having some of the most stunning peaks on the planet, the central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan is off most adventurers’ radars. But not that of Gerhard Czerner, who’d long set his sights on MTB-ing in the spectacular Turkestan Range.

BIVOUAC CULTURE

Photographer and alpine guide Ben Tibbetts may be based in the French town of Chamonix, but he has spent years exploring the breadth of the European Alps. In: particular, the alpine bivouacs and shelters dotted through these high peaks have long fascinated him, and he has spent years documenting them. In this beautiful photo essay, he shares images from his book Cabin Wild: Alpine Bivouac Huts, Vols 1 & 2.

MOUNTAINS OF LOVE

Two ascents, linked but separated by nearly a quarter of a century:
Huw Kingston climbs a mountain he loves, and another for love.

THE PROMISED LAND

Judgement awaited Craig Pearce when he made his pilgrimage to Tasmania’s Walls of Jerusalem. It didn’t turn out as he expected.

TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS

How relentless gear failures turned a Southwest Tassie adventure into a lesson on resilience, challenge, and the power of UV glue.
