There’s something special about spending a cool night out under the stars in the Blue Mountains. The air is crisp, the silence feels endless, and when the temperature drops to around 5°C overnight, your sleep system quickly becomes the difference between a memorable adventure and a sleepless sufferfest. On a recent trip to a stunning Blue Mountains lookout, I tested the new Sea to Summit sleep system consisting of the Sea to Summit Ultralight XR Insulated Air Sleeping Mat, the Sea to Summit Circuit Down Sleeping Bag, and the Sea to Summit Aeros Pillow Premium. This combination packed easily into my hiking bag and provided the comfort and warmth I was looking for to get a good rest, without weighing down my pack.

The standout performer for me was the Ultralight XR Insulated Air Sleeping Mat. I used the Large version, and the extra width and length made a noticeable difference, especially as someone who shifts positions during the night. Despite being incredibly lightweight and compact, the mat felt surprisingly supportive. Sea to Summit’s Air Sprung Cell design did an excellent job distributing pressure, avoiding that ‘lumpy’ sensation that I’ve felt with other ultralight mats. The 6.5cm thickness gave enough cushioning to smooth out the rocky ground and supported my whole body while on my back and my side.
What really mattered on this trip, though, was warmth. I tend to feel the cold more than most of my friends. So when temps dropped to 5°C with cold air rolling across the escarpment overnight, the XR’s R-value of 3.6 proved more than capable for cooler conditions. I never felt cold creeping up from the ground, even in the early morning hours when temperatures felt at their lowest. The ThermalCore insulation did a great job of retaining warmth without adding unnecessary bulk. Inflation was really easy thanks to the integrated pump sack, which saved both effort and moisture buildup inside the mat.

I paired the mat with the Circuit Down Sleeping Bag rated to -1°C. This bag hit a really sweet spot between warmth, comfort, and packability. At 5°C, I was perfectly comfortable wearing just a thermal base layer, and the bag retained heat exceptionally well throughout the night. The down insulation lofted quickly after unpacking and giving it a little shake. I opted for the long version, which provided plenty of room for me to keep a change of clothes at my feet – a little hack so I have warm clothes to put on in the morning. I particularly appreciated how soft and non-restrictive the interior felt. The semi-tapered-rectangular toe box let me move around naturally without having to re-adjust the sleeping bag. Plus, I love how it unzips and opens up flat so I can use it as a cozy camp blanket.

The final piece of the system, the Aeros Pillow Premium, tied everything together. I always opt for Sea to Summit sleep systems because of the non-slip PillowLock system, which keeps your pillow from running away at 2 am. The scalloped shape fits nicely around my neck and shoulders, no matter the sleeping position, and I appreciate how easy it is to adjust the firmness with one push of a button.

Overall, this Sea to Summit sleep system feels exceptionally refined for backpackers who want lightweight gear without sacrificing real comfort. On a chilly Blue Mountains night, this setup delivered warmth, support, and one of the most comfortable outdoor sleeps I’ve had in a long time. It packs small and light, performs well in cooler conditions, and feels thoughtfully designed from top to bottom. For hikers looking for a premium three-season sleep setup, this combination is hard to fault.
