Wild 194 is on sale now
Wild’s Summer 2024 issue is on sale now!
Wild #194, Summer 2024 is here, one to beat the Summer heat. As you might expect, paddling is one on the agenda, with features on packrafting Victoria’s Mitchell River and sea kayaking in British Columbia. But not all the watery goodness involves paddling. Our Wild Bunch features a selection of five Blue Mountains canyons as chosen by canyon guru Tom Brennan. And there’s two excellent river-walking features, too, each from very different parts of Australia: The first an account of nineteen day, edge-to-edge crossing of NSW’s Oxley Wild Rivers NP that took in 52—yes, 52!—river crossings; and the second comes from WA’s Kimberley, where we get a rare and strikingly beautiful glimpse into the Bungle Bungles in the height of the wet season. The imagery is phenomenal.Â
Of course, not all summer hiking needs to involve rivers. Tassie’s Southwest Cape is featured; so, too, is NZ’s Five Passes; and we have track notes for a high-country circuit of Kosciuszko NP’s iconic Mt Jagungal. Further afield, we have a feature on Tibet’s sacred mountain Amne Machin. Further away again, and if you need the sight of snow to take your mind off the summer height, this issue’s stunning photo essay will take you alpine climbing to the summits of Europe’s 4000m peaks. That’s not the only mountaineering story either: we also have an in-depth Q+A with Tim Macartney-Snape reflecting on his groundbreaking Everest ascent 40 years ago, the first by a team of Aussies.
As for conservation, we have this issue’s cover story. Renowned for its challenging walking, Tasmania’s South Coast Track is an ecological sanctuary and a place of precious darkness. But a proposal to build a string of private lodges along it threatens its delicate balance; a Bio Blitz survery shows what’s at stake. We also have an opinion piece on Tasmania’s draconian No-protest laws, along with our regular Green Pages section.
There’s also a brilliant profile on the youthful but acclaimed novelist Ya Reeves, and our regular columnists and gear reviews as well. It’s yet another awesome issue, with cracking imagery and loads of beautifully crafted stories to read over the holiday period. Head to
