Wild 192 is on sale now
Wild’s Winter 2024 issue is on sale now!
Wild’s Winter Issue #192 is here, and wow, this has to be one Wild’s best issues ever. Is it ever awesome! And wintry, too. For starters, check out that cover! Pro skier Sam Smoothy has undertaken a project to ski all of NZ’s 3000m peaks, and his (beautifully photographed) story about it is not simply a progress report but instead an intimate and philosophical exploration of how meaning can be found in the mountains.
Speaking of progression—and of thoughtful and beautifully photographed stories—Adam Flower takes us on a global journey as he tells how in just five years, he went from an Aussie who’d never climbed rock, let alone ice, to making ice and alpine climbing one of his life’s key driving forces.
There are more wintry stories, too. Ryan Hansen takes us snowshoeing in Kosciuszko NP. Janina Kuzma gives us lessons for backcountry skiers. We have snow sports volunteers telling us their stories. And, of course, winter in Oz doesn’t just mean snow and ice; if you’re up north, this is exactly the time to go adventuring. Jack Schmidt’s offers us a local’s perspective on hiking on stunning Hinchinbrook Island. Chris Armstrong’s track-and-paddle notes give us the lowdown on a hiking/packrafting trip in the NT’s Katherine Gorge. And this issue’s Wild Bunch takes us on five walks in the Kimberley. We also have a beautiful feature by Anja Fuechtbauer on hiking in British Columbia; winter Down Under means summer hiking in Canada.
Aside from adventure, we have a lovely profile by Megan Holbeck on climbing legend Louise Shepherd. We have an informative feature by Brooke Nolan on dealing with mental health incidents in the outdoors. And we have two amazing conservation features: one from John Middendorf on the history of aerial forest activism in Tasmania; the other, a photo essay from Rob Blakers on one of the very things those forest activists are trying to save—Tassie’s stunning and precious paleo-endemic trees.
There’s loads more great stuff too. The issue will be on sale in newsagents in Oz on June 10. But better yet, consider subscribing to Wild. Not only will you support the mag, you’ll support our amazing, inspirational contributors too. Oh, and you’ll save a few bucks as well. Head to
