“Golden hour. It’s a magical time of day, when all the pretty colours come out to play. But it’s also a tricky time to shoot landscapes, especially when your shots have people in them. Lighting changes quickly, and you’ve gotta be just as quick to adapt to these changes, both in terms of composition and settings.
When we arrived at Mitchell Dyke late in the afternoon, we hastily set up camp and raced to the summit for sunset. With the light rapidly fading, and as Maddy made us all a warm brew, I quickly set up my tripod and fired away some quick test shots. With the sun making its final dash towards the horizon, we knew we’d only get one sequence of shots before the light disappeared. I widened the aperture and bumped up the ISO so the shutter speed was fast enough to snap Martine as she made the dash along the summit ridge of the dyke. When she got to the edge, the light had dimmed; I slowed the shutter speed and Martine (pictured) did her best statue impersonation. This was the last frame I shot.”
