If you’ve spent any time around people who travel a lot, climbers, hikers, bike people, general dirtbags, you’ll know everyone has a backpack they won’t shut up about. For some, it’s a little daypack that’s been patched a dozen times. For others, it’s a beaten up duffel that smells like every trip they’ve ever taken. The Cotopaxi Allpa 50L is edging its way into that category for me.
I have been testing the Allpa 50L for the past 4 months and have taken it on two notable trips recently: a holiday run to Sydney, then a week in Canberra for Sea Otter. Five days of clothes, toiletries, and the usual handful of bits you swear you don’t need but take anyway, all of it went into the Allpa without any packing Tetris or hanging off the zips. And that’s kind of the whole charm of this bag: it’s extremely easy to live with on the move.
Design & build
First thing: the Allpa looks good, like really good. The Blue Spruce/Abyss colourway is schmick, as to be expected from Cotopaxi, which always nails that clean-but-still-fun aesthetic. It looks like a travel pack without screaming I’m a travel pack.

The bag feels chunky and durable in the best way. The TPU coated recycled nylon shell has that slightly rubbery, hard wearing feel, and the ripstop panels back it up. You don’t baby this thing. You chuck it down on airport floors, drag it out of a boot, overstuff it, zip it shut, and trust it’ll hold.

And the zips… they’re thick. They feel like they were designed by someone who’s had one too many broken zips.
Functionality of the Cotopaxi Allpa
The Allpa opens fully clamshell style, so packing feels more like using a suitcase than rummaging through a top loader.
The internal pockets are massive and hold way more than they look like they should. There’s proper organisation without feeling fiddly or overdesigned.
And the removable 8L sling? Genuinely handy. Airport security, wandering around cities, ducking into a shop, it’s the perfect “I don’t want my full bag right now” size.

Although it’s not designed as a hiking pack, I’ve taken it out on a couple of cooler month hikes around Brisbane. For carrying picnic gear, jackets, food for a few people or just general “everyone give your stuff to me” duties, it works surprisingly well. It’s not a sweaty season pack, but for a casual day out, it does the job without complaint.

The harness system is adjustable and surprisingly comfortable. I didn’t do any big urban treks with it loaded to the gills, but for general travel around airports, it sat nicely on the back. The hipbelt and straps tuck away cleanly if you’re checking the bag, a nice touch.
Carry on compatible?
Cotopaxi says it’s carry on friendly, and that’s true… with some caveats. Fully stuffed, it looks way too big to be a carry on bag, but it fit into the measurement cube, and I never got questioned. It slotted into overhead bins on both trips without drama. I’ve included the pack dimensions below.
- Overall Pack: 69 x 36 x 26 cm
- Base Pack: 55 x 36 x 23 cm
- Sling: 33 x 22 x 14 cm
- 1.98 kg
What could be better?
No bag is perfect for everyone; most bags are designed for different activities. The Allpa 50L is intended to be your go-to for travel; therefore, at just shy of 2kg, it’s not light. Durability comes with weight, and the Allpa owns that.
The back panel isn’t breathable in hot weather. On hot summer days, you’ll end up with a large, unavoidable sweat patch, which is part of the price of using a travel pack outside its intended zone.
Our verdict on the Cotopaxi Allpa
The Cotopaxi Allpa 50L feels like a travel pack made by people who’ve spent actual time travelling, not just commuting with a laptop. It’s tough, thoughtfully laid out, comfortable to carry, and, frankly, looks great.

If you’re chasing an ultralight backpacking setup, this isn’t it. But if you want a reliable pack that handles airport travel, weekend escapes, and even the odd day hike, the Allpa 50L is a genuinely excellent choice.
It’s the kind of bag you start taking “just in case”… and then realise it’s quietly become your default for everything.
