Many adventurers will try their hand at fishing for their dinner, but sometimes a fish dinner is easier brought along. The following dish is simple, nutritious and easy to pack for any outdoor journey.
This recipe I learned from a Berber nomad in the Sahara desert – far from any rivers. The nomads shared this meal with me while on a 250-kilometre trek across the northern Sahara.
10 (60g) dried tomatoes in oil
1 small red onion
1 small cucumber
Small bunch of coriander (optional)
1 tin of sardines in oil
Salt and pepper to taste
In the field
Dice the cucumber, chop the onion, halve each tomato and finely chop the coriander to taste. Place all together in a bowl, add the tin of sardines, sprinkle with the cumin and paprika, season with salt and pepper and gently stir together. Serve with unleavened bread for a complete meal.
