Recently, Australian-owned and operated outdoor retail chain, Paddy Pallin announced it would be opening a pop-up shop on Bridge Road, Richmond only a short time after closing its permanent Hawthorn location.

While the once-thriving retail precinct has become increasingly vacated by retail businesses over the past five or more years, management at Paddy Pallin believe the limited timing of the proposition should coax consumers in the area to open their wallets for a bargain.

Designed as a specific clearance outlet, managing director Tim Pallin said the idea came about after the brand was “initially approached by some key suppliers” who were seeking an opportunity for a partnership to help move stock outside Paddy Pallin’s existing bricks and mortar footprint.

Paddy Pallin Bridge Road pop-up

Paddy Pallin pop-up store appeared on Bridge Road in Richmond last week.

“We have done a few pop-up stores and off-site clearances before,” said Pallin. “They are a good way of realising some cash from overstocks and our customers will love the prices, which are genuinely heavily reduced.”

Pallin said that certain items that usually don’t get reduced are carrying deep discounts, and includes brands such as Icebreaker, Marmot, The North Face, ExOfficio and Patagonia.

Upon visiting the location, it’s clear that Icebreaker in particular are well represented on the showroom floor while the shop itself is situated well away from other outdoor retailers on the strip, appearing much nearer the city end of Bridge Road.

For bargains on outdoor and active apparel, the Richmond-based location could prove popular at a time of year when clearance sales aren’t expected.

However, as it is a temporary pop-up, prospective customers may not have long to visit before it closes its doors.

“At this stage we’re looking at a three month operation,” Pallin said. “However if the site does well we may consider a more permanent store.”

Wild understands that the site of the temporary lease was selected at a competitive rate as a direct result of falling retail tenancy in the vicinity, while management also cited proximity to the chain’s old Hawthorn locations as an additional justification for the decision.

Paddy Pallin’s pop-up clearance store can be found at 235 Bridge Road, Richmond (for now).
